What does “X-Ray” stand for and how does it work?
X-Ray refers to a form of electromagnetic radiation, and the term is commonly used to describe the imaging technique that employs X-rays to view the internal structures of the body. X-ray imaging is a quick and painless procedure that uses a small dose of ionizing radiation to produce images of the inside of the body. Here’s how it works:
- Emission of X-Rays : An X-ray machine generates X-rays, which are a type of high-energy electromagnetic radiation.
- Passing Through the Body : The X-rays pass through the body and are absorbed in varying degrees by different tissues. Dense tissues, such as bones, absorb more X-rays and appear white on the X-ray image.
- Detection : After passing through the body, the X-rays strike a detector or film on the other side, creating an image based on the varying levels of absorption.
- Image Formation : The resulting image shows the internal structures of the body, with denser areas appearing lighter and less dense areas appearing darker.
X-rays are commonly used for :
- Diagnosing fractures and bone abnormalities
- Detecting infections in the lungs (e.g., pneumonia)
- Certain abdominal conditions
